Backstrom Crafts a Contemplative Neoclassical Ballad in ‘Animal’

Backstrom is the musical moniker of singer-songwriter and composer, Bart Topher. Hailing from Sweden, the artist brings a lot of introspection into his music, dilating thoughts and moods with affecting compositions and sonic commentaries. His favorite topics of contemplation revolve around the human experience, especially philosophical rhetoric and exploration of the psyche. In his single, ‘Animal’ Backstrom burrows through a neoclassical mist to enlighten the visceral exhibitions of human nature.

‘There’s a beast in the heart of the quiet, there’s a lie in the mind of every man, and when you’re pressed beyond the flesh, you’re the animal you have always been’.

The vocals are performative, the song, presented like a musical theater. Deep, baritonal cellos swipe through the soundscape, vesting it with the spirit of the theme. Bart’s voice is solemn and straightforward, softened only by the violin quips and the soprano harmonies that wind around it. As the orchestra unravels more prominently within the narrative, the track becomes an anthem of the demons that hide in the darkness, way beyond the realm of morality, grace, and good will.
