The Margaret Hooligans’ ‘Revenge of the ScarJo’ is an Alt-Rock Tapestry of Distortion & Melody

The Margaret Hooligans is an experimental alt-rock band. Focused on fathoming a plane of transcendence, the duo combine disjointed frames and sonic cultures. In their latest track, ‘Revenge of the ScarJo’ they feature post-punk explorations alongside garage rock, and blues vocals. It comes together to create a tapestry of distortion and melody, darkness and drama. This duo treads the creative paths of artists like The Who, Miles Davis, Fiona Apple, and Grateful Dead, to find their own sound.

The track opens with brush strokes of electric ukulele that break up the pieces of blues verses. With small percussive accents and unpredictable melody tangents, they use rhythmic ambiguity to drive the theme forward. The more we listen, the more we learn that the soundscape features a lot of storytelling elements, that fall through the cracks only to erupt again with the periodic flush of the ukulele.
