Album Review/ Acoustic : Andy Z’s ‘My Voice’

Andy Z’s latest album is ‘My Voice’, a playful, quirky, alt pop-jazz collection that features an array of feel-goodness. The artist has such an easy and effortless way of creating these crafty, chunky, and character rich soundscapes. He gives them color, texture, and a mood. It all comes out of the soundscape like a children’s rhyme does. Joyful, playful, curious, and wondrous. In tracks like ‘Song For My Baby’, ‘Good Morning’ and ‘My Voice’, the artist adapts a rhyme like music format, overlaying it with more complex musical arrangements like jazz, contemplative acoustics and fresh themes.

‘Flutter Flutter Butterfly’ and ‘Mariposa Vuela’ both have bluesy, Latin acoustics. The sharp melodic tones and fresh baritones detail the song with intricate inflections and grooves. The grooves are loose and breezy, fluid in how they envelope and interact with the rest of the soundscape.

‘Spider on the Floor’, ‘Buzzabee’, ‘Knees up Mother Brown’, and ‘Hurry Hurry Drive the Fire Truck’ are made to engage children. It springs out of the soundscape. The animated vocals, the cartoonish production, and the dramatic sounds. It’s so fun, so engaging, definitely immersive.

‘Down by the Bay’, ‘Five Green and Speckled Frogs’, and ‘Apples’ have a more rustic country style. The first of the three is a sunny song, detailing all the things that you can find at the bay. It has such a nostalgic feel, as if drawn from countless memories of the singer, passing it on as he sings to his child. The second track of this cluster has a more dynamic country sound. With banjo melodies twanging through the scene, it is fun. There's some of that vocal animation in this as well, histrionic in a way that will definitely amuse the kids. Same with ‘Apples’.

‘It’s not Your Fault’ and ‘Lullabye’ are heartfelt songs that conclude the album. With the sentimental vocals and deep evocative themes, the first gives advice, from father to child. Easing their mind and consoling the sadness that could arise from misplaced blame. It’s sweet and endearing. And with the final track, after a whole series of songs that entertain, inform, engage, and induce fun, the artist puts the child to sleep with a heartwarming lullaby. The love, adoration, and coziness in the song is unmatched. It can melt even the hardest person and put them to sleep. So if you’re looking for a collection of songs to introduce your child to, to keep them company in a wholesome way, then this is definitely for you!
