Album Review/ Alt Folk : BC25’s ‘Unearthed Pt. 2’
If you like listening to music like you’re watching a painting, then BC25’s latest album, ‘Unearthed Pt. 2’ is for you. The tracks move with so much detail, depth, perspective and tale. A slow and swirling revelation of music and moments. The acoustic album plays not only with folk stylings but blends it with neo-classicals, classical, and a contemporary pop ethos to create its own world. A musical brand that feels familiar and fresh at the same time.
‘Second Window’ opens the collection with its earthy beats and accordion theatrics. The dynamic rhythm is like a wave that lifts and falls into the sandy beaches of the vocals. There’s dark theatrics that play out in the transitive spaces, creating enchanting layers to draw from. We see moments of this dynamism held and handled differently in ‘The Reckoning’, ‘Run The Lights’, and ‘Through the Second Window’. All of these tracks stand witnesses to the duo’s vast stylistic enterprise and explorations.
‘The Reckoning’ has a very Rachel Platten spirit. The vocals scale across a spectrum of pop and performance. Matched with a wandering rhythm, the track is quite refreshing. In ‘Run the Lights’ and ‘Through the Second Window’, they explore electronic influences, creating such an exhilarating listening experience. As a peak, a song about coming into yourself, it has the boost and the energy to take you all the way.
In tracks like ‘No Words’, ‘Hold’ and ‘All That Rises’, we see softer, more intimate spaces. Strung with tender moments and poetic expression, the scenes that form are so beautifully human. They have a vivid imprint yet a transient feeling. ‘Under’ has a similar make, but it shines with theatrical features, be it the vocal style or the thoughtful contrasts that the melodies pose to it. ‘Quiet Endings’, the penultimate track has a little bit more of weight to it. With electric guitar fringes, the vocals are matched with a dazing blues influence. That soft pain of melancholy, of a goodbye flows out, oozes with sensibilities and authenticity.
BC25 are Vela Sorell and Barbonus who explore the nature of presence with their music. It’s about standing still, long enough to perceive, to feel and understand the journeys that you’re going on. That’s what this whole collection reflects. Its intentional slow rhythms, deep instrumental nuances and evocative vocals. All of it helps us navigate the softer spaces of living. Listen Now!
