Album Review/ Alt Pop : Remik Erikson’s ‘A Baker’s Dirty Dozen’

Remik Erikson is an electronic music artist who has a delightful way of looping the pop culture in. His music is dynamic and energetic. And it’s the kind of energy that is memorable, that draws you back and keeps you having fun. If you’re looking for light-hearted, feel-good and entertaining music, then Remik Erikson is perfect for you. His latest release is ‘A Baker’s Dirty Dozen’, a collection of songs that reveal the many stylistic dimensions of the artist. In that, you realize that his potential and possibilities are endless.

Each track is a unique frame of music with a listening experience that you can fold into. There’s also a great deal of lyrical sophistication and creativity that further elevates the experience of the theme. 

Tracks like ‘Toss Your Salad’, ‘Balls O Meat’, and ‘Fondue’ have fun and lively soundscapes. With catchy verse loops, active synth builds, and racing beat attacks, these tracks are notable. ‘Balls O Meat’ is especially fun with its rhyming, rhythmic, and laughing lyrics. 

There are moments of sentimental highs, peaks where the music feels expansive and you feel like you’re all the way in the top somewhere. In tracks like ‘All Spice’, ‘Nacho’ and ‘Pound Caker’, you feel the blend of soulful pop vocals with sweeping electronic music lifts. House music that suspends you in ways that makes you feel the emotion in a whole different way. The beats are undeniable. Forming briskly and with full of energy, they change the melodic ambits of the song, especially the way that you feel them. ‘Nacho’ has softer planes, notes that take you to a surreal plane almost, while ‘Pound Caker’ keeps you grounded with its deep and aggressive basslines. 

‘Kreames’ forms with drum n bass rhythms, inserted between alternative electro frames, pop rap verses. The rhythm, you can find pulsing in so many parts of the song. It’s fragmented and unified at the same time. By the end of it, the experience feels multiplied, in energy, joy, and emotion. ‘Taste Bud King’ also has some of these elements. But it’s a little bit more experimental and darker. More fluid in the way that it explores the theme. ‘BBC AirBNB’ builds into this stylistic theme as well. 

There are softer tracks as well, more thoughtful and mellow, but with a similar stylistic feel as these tracks. ‘Deviled Egg’ has an emo feel to it, it brings you in and then tries to push you away. It’s quite the complex track, but the bare vocal moments take you deeper, make you feel more.  ‘All Spice’ and ‘Smashburgah’ are feel-good, fun and easy to fall in love with. They have an infectious beat, playful melodies and nice scenic peaks that you can enjoy. ‘Pie Me Down’ concludes the album. It feels like the 2016 electro pop hits that you can ride or die with.
