Album Review/ Alt Rock : Blueprint Tokyo’s ‘Neon Circuits and the Mission of Hope’

Blueprint Tokyo is an indie rock band. One of the best in this modern world of conception and innovation. They slather the indie rock atmosphere with planes of pop, electric synths, and soaring beats; so much so that it is transporting. The soundscapes are not of this world, they seem to be influenced and energized by distant lands that are contained within humans. Landscapes that are so vast, varied and vivid; an emotional fantasy that is liberated by conduits of Blueprint Tokyo’s artistry.

Their latest release is ‘Neon Circuits and The Mission of Hope’, a collection that speculates the boundaries of indie rock and see how far it can be stretched. How resilient and how dreamy and surreal it can get. And they deliver such fantastical spaces, music that is fresh and liberating.

‘Say Anything’ opens the album with a youthful stride. The composition is modern and alive, spreading its embers around, passing it on, adrift like a forest fire. The blurred riffs add a translucent film of texture that blends well with the electric splash and circuits of synth color that it encounters. ‘Stranger Things’, ‘Stand and Deliver’, and ‘Invisible Year’ have a similar passion, an aligned rhythm progression; all drifting - drums, guitar, vocals, and thematic feelings.

‘Take My Breath’ is a jazz rock exploration, so electric and dynamic. The saxophone stream mushrooms eccentrically; it grows into you and takes you on a cerebral journey. In ‘Mission Control’ and ‘Infused’ we see a disco beat leading the indie rock taking us back to scenes from David Bowie’s music. ‘Closed Door Drama’ is flavoured with cryptic blues characters.

They play with indie rock like this, juxtaposing it with so many other genres and stylistic elements. Some songs play out like they’ve written themselves. That’s how natural and intuitively they mix their styles and soundscapes. It’s quite intoxicating. Especially tracks like ‘Connected Lines’ and ‘Take Me Anyplace’ are so fun to go along with. The thrill of speed, the height of exhilaration, the expanse of indie rock; all of it is transferred to the listener.

Finally, we also see slower, contemplative tracks with ‘A Whole New Life’. There’s that mellow psychedelic rock warp playing on thoughtful lyrics and classic rock elements; reminiscent of The Beatles. ‘Only Hearts’ is another slow rise, so passionate, gloomy and sensual. So generous with its ambience and so powerful in its lure. Listen Now!
