Album Review/ Alt Rock : The Transference’s ‘floodlights’
The Transference is an indie rock/ power pop band with a strong sense of style and an irrepressible energy profile. It is as if their energy precedes them. Their soundscapes are vibrant, lofty, and dynamic, but also contemplative, feel-good, and wholesome. They bring these moments of driving rhythms to a heartfelt flow and the results are amazing. Their latest release is ‘Floodlights’, an album that is made like its title suggests. There’s a lot of that fanfare, celebratory, and busy frames. Luminous instrumentals and roaring beats. Alongside that, there are those stark frames of dazing realities and cerebral euphoria.
‘Circling the Square’ opens the collection. Introduced with an edgy riff signature, zigzagging basslines, and fresh melodic specks, it leads us to the feel-good vocal line. There’s a country plane also to this song, that further activates the spirit of the band. It is an active soundscape, the rhythms seemingly marching off into the energy highs of the chorus. And the lyrical pieces like ‘tearing up this town’, ‘circling the square’, and ‘spinning round and round’ craft the impulse of youth, young love, and all the fun that comes out of it.
We see a reflection of the country motif, its softer parts in many tracks across the album. In tracks like ‘Dovetail’, ‘Nighttail’, ‘Spiral Up’, and ‘Wildfire’, we see so many different ways in which they smoothly blend country motifs with pop and rock elements. Even ‘Roots Down Deep’
Now if you want some edgy blues, you get to the ‘Ramon Says I’m The Devil’, a track that is so fantastically written and performed. There’s so many dimensions to this song. The instrumentals are smoking. Moody vocals, bass grooves, and a flashing riff sky. It all sparks a fantastic explosion of the theme. The blues get thick and full of country midway into the song. Spreads into the vocals, into the imagery, and everything else.
‘Aliens’ and ‘Spiral Up’ have a lot of electric pop elements. With synth specks, chromatism relieving the deep textures of rock, you get to such a fun space. They manifest the theme in such fun and engaging ways across the track.
Lastly we have ‘Sunsets’, a track that boasts the range and stylistic intricacies of the vocals. With long-winded vocal lines, journeying through the expanse of the theme, it’s almost as if you can taste the emotion of the sunset. The vocalist channels the romance, the beauty, and the fantastical nature of it, all into her performance. And it’s all very very good! Listen Now!
