Album Review/ Alternative : Plural Gallery’s ‘Portable Aura’

Plural Gallery is an alternative Nashville project meant to immerse you in the atmosphere of their plural stylings. As their banner suggests, this group loves to wander, blend and then explore some more. Their latest album is called ‘Portable Aura’, a collection that is ideal to take on the road with you. It is dynamic and full of new elements. The tracks are made to keep your attention drawn to fresh spaces, new feelings and unique frames. Like when you’re on a vacation. You see so many new things that evoke unique energy and feelings in you.

Across the album, the listener will encounter unique melodic solos, blues guitar, experimental work, and mainstream rock even connecting vocal pools. All blended to formulate a fresh sense of the genre that we all know and love. Each track encloses an aura around you. It walks with you, runs with you and skips with you. Giving you a new energy and language to experience the world around you with.

‘Skin Deep’ opens off the album. It sets a moody and thoughtful frame, looping in blues with playful melodies, brimming basslines and floating vocal pieces. The track is marked with a retro aura with the group seemingly creating pleasing stylistic joints. You’ll see Latin blues rock, carrying into a sentimental flow which then scales into an 80s reminiscent electro rock with a sentimental call. The same evocation is served up, continued and scaled with such different styles.

You’ll see this wormholing style even in ‘Abacus’, where one stylistic culmination opens the door to a whole other, contrasting mood. But somehow it works like a wonder. It keeps you hooked, keeps you curious.

Tracks like ‘Lunera’ and ‘Serra’ really feed from the indie rock, shoegaze frames. The textural alt rock is built with a riff forward sound. The chromatism adds to the magic of this listening experience. With that delectable dream pop melodies, energised by the fuzzy riffs, matched with dazing vocals are a very transcendental combination. Very memorable.

‘Dark Matter’ is a song that twinkles with old school blues. There’s a jazz flavor in there somewhere that gives it a whimsical license to experiment and infuse space rock, electro rock moments within the track. Albeit sparingly. ‘Crystalline’ has a similar build, with its shoegaze attaching to a dream pop drift. The plush blues guitar chords are changed by the bounce in the beat. There are electronic variations within this track as well. It cultivates the 70s and 80s styles, allowing them to interact with nuance filters. It takes you to artists like David Bowie and Carlos Santana. Such vividly different artistic styles, but the band reconciles the feelings to create an interesting continuum.

‘Dust (on your wings)’ is an acoustic rock/ classic rock flow. A soothing, warm and evocative flow that rounds up the album quite well. After travelling through such distinct sound frames, one after the other, watching their dynamic interactions, this one is 70s psychedelic/ classic rock. It has the cerebral ambiguity of the rest of the album, however, there is something about it that concludes all explorations. It closes the album quite well, leaving nothing open ended. Keeps you flying across the psychedelic and explorative rock radar without opening any new wormholes. Listen Now!
