Album Review/ Art Rock : Blunt Blade’s ‘Forgiveness’

Blunt Blade is not your average musician. Their visions are grand and spectacular. With creative soundscapes that match that largesse, both in conception and execution. There’s a lot of cinematic elements that put on quite the show with moments of rock, electronica, pop, everything in between. Their latest release is ‘Forgiveness’, an album that samples electronic sequences alongside deep rock and inexorable pop flows. It is a collection that is definitely worth taking in because of what it has to offer.

‘Sprawling’ gives the collection a strong start with its mysterious synths, drilling rock landscape, and haunting vocals. All these three styles manifest with patterns, textures, and other characteristic features. Some retro, some modern, all one fell cinematic sweep. ‘The Journey to Hope/ Esperanza’ fuses similar pallets, building them up to a fantastic high. In this track, however, we get to see a whole lot of dimensions, ones that the artist built into the track. You can watch them evolve with a natural spontaneity.

‘Justified’ has exalting features. A lot of altitude and peak flows. The track is forged with power, momentum, and exhilaration. This cycle keeps repeating itself to bring out the theme explosively. This sense of power and indulgence when it comes to playing is a recurring feature across the album. The riff-bass-beat work is almost like a hyper fixation done well. You cannot get enough. So they keep giving it to you. You want to keep the addictive tornado going.

However, there is reprieve, a duality, a softer perspective. With patterned electronica and chromatic work, the artist creates context for the grind. In ‘Helpless’ they build it with experimental electronica. ‘Hindrace’ is a soulful interlude that adds to the contemplative atmosphere of the album. In ‘Careless Acts’, we see explorative whimsy and a performative high. With lifting vocal harmonies, chorals, and soaring electronica, they reach an extraordinary apex.

The title track concludes the album. It starts off where Careless Acts leaves off. There are a lot of experimental features. Like the evolving rhythms, mercurial melodies, histrionic vocals, and dramatic swirls of emotion. It’s like you’re streaming through a seven part play that deals in human complexity. There are so many interpretations, both of style and thematic exposure. It makes you think, feel, move, get lost, be found and then be lost again. And it’s the best thing ever. Listen Now!
