Album Review/ Funk : Synthonic’s ‘Lampin’
Synthonic is a funk project written, recorded and produced by London based musician, Kieron Garrett. It holds the modern interpretation of the genre, manifesting in vivid and vibrant ways across the discography. His latest release is the ‘Lampin’ album, a splashy jazz, funk, psychedelic rock, blues collection; a traversal of the soul space in such new and fresh ways. His work as a composer is largely experimental. He loves a good exploration. He loves to get lost, to stray and discover, play and wander. And that’s the experience he leaves his listeners with.
‘All Day, Every Day’ is a mellow piece, ambient with soft tones, delicate threads of melody, leading us into flashing fanfares, funky grooves, and afrobeats. A smooth transition that carries the stillness but also incorporates the dynamic and dances.
It is a colorful album with a lot of splashy, sweet, and sweeping elements. A larger than life sort of aura that you can just keep sipping from. The artist has fun with his music and that’s what we get to flow with. You’ll especially see colors alongside remarkable design and technique with songs like ‘Chameleons’ and ‘I Said I’m Sorry’. There’s a chromatic element in all songs, but these two spring with ready colors.
In ‘Big Fat Funk!’ and ‘The Quirk’ you’ll encounter the experimental ambits of his music the most. Both tracks feature Jeremy Dunning and grooves of many shapes and sizes. Some large and expansive, others tight and quick like a ringlet. With mercurial beats changing the rhythm at every curve, defining grooves and driving the soundscape, these two tracks are visionary to say the least.
‘Tonight’ and ‘El Paseo’ are kind of kept deliberately mellow. The former with its romantic, glassy, blues jazz, and the latter with its smooth synths, twinkling melodies, and ethereal harmonies. They soothe the mind with swirling textures, a feeling of sweet exposure, joyful exchange flows through you.
Each track delivers a world of its own, with its own energy, orbit and sensibilities. And it is all just very delightful to be a part of. Because the artist has such a special way of connecting with his listeners. Vesting tracks with soft pulses of his thought, he inspires a journey, a theme that you definitely want to be flowing with.
