Album Review/ Pop : Avaraj’s ‘The Crumble’

Avaraj is a singer-songwriter and pop artist who emulates the rhythms, tones, textures, and moments of her life to create music. Her songs are thoughtful and intimate, fun and energetic. ‘The Crumble’ is the artist’s latest album, a collection that embraces the theme of love and romance, and builds a whole world around it. There are picturesque frames, storytelling narratives and imagery that brings it all to life.

The track, ‘Romance’ opens the collection. With its twinkling melodies, luminous moments and swaying vocal lines, pop is blended with R&B atmospheres and its moody resonance. It’s reflective and reminiscent. We see these performative and immersive aspects across the soundscape. Avaraj allows it to manifest with so many stylistic variations and sweet layers. In ‘Two Lines’, we see a slow, expressive burn with a mellow cinematic backdrop. A minimalistic space is detailed with precise and specific elements, details that filter into the theme in a very layered way. Similarly with ‘Influences’, we see a swelling neoclassical show. Gentle tides of music washing over you as the vocals pave inroads into it.

The artist portrays specific experiences in universal ways, with moments that we can all relate and build into. And in moments of nuanced connection, the art comes to life. ‘The Crumble’, the title track is up next. Opening with bare vocals, it lifts into an acoustic rock frame. The riffs are warm and cozy; the chords form islands of sentiment and stories. ‘Winter Blues’ carries this mood. Along with a cinematic pull, it also burst with mellow hip-hop beats and influences. It is lo-fi and catchy in a way that so perfectly fits into the collection. ‘What Could’ve Been’ continues the beats and gains a melodic colony of feeling.

‘Perfect Storm’ broils up an electronic drama. ‘In My Dreams’ and ‘Imagination’ projects plush and dreamy frames. So soft and fresh in a nocturnal and surreal way. Lastly, ‘Perfect Weekend - Demo’, a track that concludes the collection with its calming, straight lined, simplicity. Listen Now!
