Album Review/ Pop Rock : Erro’s ‘Shadowland’
Erro is a Pittsburg-based pop rock band with a new sound. Fronted by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Nikki Stagel, the style is fluid and layered. The dynamism is soft, paired with the feeling of wanting to linger, explore and comprehend emotional spaces. It has a modern pulse, unique calls, and fresh sensibilities. Their latest release is the ‘Shadowland’ album, a collection made bountiful by the alternative influences that they especially feel out. As a result, the collection sports such different states of mind and stream of consciousness. As if you’re flowing with them as they discover, define, and deliver.
The title track opens the collection with a soft drift. Electric guitar chords dotting dynamic arrangements, punctuating the straight line vocal flow. It’s mellow and chill, with a lot of shadow spaces left to the listener’s interpretations. Best way to experience the track is to let the band build the landscape for you, float through it and enjoy the languages and culture that comes out of it.
In tracks like ‘JMS’ and ‘The Hollow’ as well, the band crafts explorative numbers with elements of ambiguity and blurred complexity. Sometimes, you’ll get a sense of the abstractions that are weaved into the atmosphere. It can be quite immersive.
The band also gives a few pop-forward numbers. Tracks like ‘Honey Bear Lane’, ‘The Watcher’,‘Dragonfly’ and ‘Over Me’ are alt pop tracks bearing fresh moments of country and acoustical bursts. We see country instrumentals, a dilated folk-pop mix in one. In another, we see an upbeat, synth-heavy, disco flavored sound. Such vivid moments of sound that are layered with contemplative planes and swirling genres.
‘Walls’ and ‘Words About Life’ are evocative reflective pop tracks with rock accents. They have an impactful call, a sense of curiosity and query about the human experience. It’s the songs that seal the connection for the first time listener with the artist. Deep themes, vulnerable presentations, and authentic emotions. Listen Now!
