If you like rock music that distorts your sense of reality and puts you in an alternative world of hazy dreams and delirious delight then The Wheel Workers is the band for you. They embrace the psychedelics of the 70s as the legacy that they are. That’s their starting point. Along the way, they pick up on the stylistic aspects of the other decades.
Blending it with grunge, alt rock and 90s edge to form a globe of consuming rock music. Their latest release is ‘One More Thing to Say’, an album where they lay it all out. They don’t hold anything back.
Made with the zeal of a dying man almost, the tracks have such dramatic formations that scale beautifully. In ‘Spreading The Fire’, ‘One Must Speak’ and ‘See All The World’, you’ll especially see the grand peaks that they climb to. With visceral slopes of riffs, psychedelic noise and a nu metal intensity, these tracks have such a substantial presence. You’ll not only see an energetic scaling. It’s more about thematic development. The way they bring depth, thought, feeling and creativity. Their passion inspires the listener’s passion for these themes. It makes them invest, make them care and give into the zeal of it all.
Some tracks are brooding. They feel a very distinct atmosphere. The mood is unchanging. The energy is consistent throughout. The depth forms in the negative sound spaces. The unsaid, the unplayed flows that form in between. They present so loudly despite their silence. You’ll see moments like this in tracks like ‘Open Invitation’, ‘Half-Asleep’, ‘Out The Window’. These tracks form one after the other. They have such notable cinematic quotients. They form like noise rock, shoegaze, drone within the ambits and interpretation of psych rock. They tumble out with such expressive largesse that it makes you keep going back. Their labyrinths run long and intense.
‘One More Thing To Say’ is a classic 70s classic rock, psychedelic rock blend. They have blues, kindred flows that have a profound effect very effortlessly. The vocals are hypnotic, almost otherworldly as they walk through the soundscape. The wilderness in the voice spreads and starts fleshing out the soundscape. It happens progressively, piercing through the planes in a way that by the end of the song, it feels different, even if there hasn’t been so much of a change in the landscapes. The journey changes you.
‘Steppin Thru’ and ‘One Must Speak’ are empowering songs that elevate you to a higher plane of expression and assertion. The energy of ‘Distractions’ ties into the alt rock fires and hypnotic trips in ‘Caves of Ice’. There’s world building in the latter track. So layered. Tying powerfully into the human experience, it takes you inward with an energy that is made to transform. You’ll see similar raises in ‘Meditation’ as well.
Ending the album with ‘Seaside’, ‘So Wrong’ and ‘In The Breeze’, the band gives you a taste of classic rock, psych alt rock at its best and refreshing melodic rock. Each one has a way of tying the listener back to core feelings and sensibilities of the album. Energy. Psychedelics. Feeling. Exploration. Power. Perspective. Freedom. ‘In The Breeze’ is especially evocative. A track that starts off with mellow energetic planes and then builds slowly and intensely into a pervasive, powerful and incredible musical complex.
