Album Review/ Rock : CAR287’s ‘Looking Through The Lens’

CAR287 is a Winnipeg-based rock band. They throw it back to 80s pop rock, blues and classic rock like it’s the most effortless thing in the world. They have a charisma and a confident style that presents their music quite well. Their latest release is ‘Looking Through the Lens’, a collection that shows off their range and the variety of their performance. The album has a lot of interesting features and feelings. A great way to journey through everyday themes, making them into incredible worlds to share in and explore together.

‘Gateway to the West’ opens the album, an acoustic rock track with a little bit of whimsy, a lot of warm vocals all slathered with glistening acoustics. Storytelling, it feels intimate and personal, kind of pulls you into them, makes you feel softly towards them. ‘Passing of Days’ presents such a beautiful continuum. Acoustic rock intro, mellow verses with piano melodies lifting gently into the backdrop. The vocals are deep and profound with a solemnity and wisdom that gives us something a little bit different than the first. A classic rock style guitar solo comes on at the bridge. So lush, dazing, and evocative that it strikes you. If you enjoy John Mayer’s music, you’re bound to like these two tracks.

‘Road Rage Leady’ brings us melodic rock in the wake of hard rock riffs, beats and basslines. It’s a fun song that leans into the frustrations that we’ve all known at some point. With a performative soundscape, they keep it on and edgy. It’s a full 90s vibe. ‘Back and Forth’ and ‘The Things They’ll Miss’ have a similar style and feeling to it.

These songs really bring out the band’s love for performance. The will to craft and play a good song is all there. ‘Muddy Waters’ is a peak classic rock song. Tinkling with blues and a spectacularly moody vocal line, it is retro and delightfully old school. ‘Ideas of a Good Life’ have similar tonalities but it’s a little bit more dynamic, warmer and summery.

There’s so much more to the album. The band has created such a treasure chest here of feel-good and fresh rock songs. So ready to be absorbed into you. If you’re in the market for a great way to spend an hour, this album is for you!
