Album Review/ Rock : ReeToxA’s ‘SOLILOQUY’

ReeToxA is an Australian rock band with a deep and gritty sound. They draw power from intense complexity. It’s alt rock, grunge revival at its best. Their latest release is the ‘Soliloquy’ double album with twenty six tracks. They go at it with a powerful hand. Exploring the 80s hard rock style, they add a lot of their own, with interpretations and stylistic nuance that takes you on journeys. Think bands like Pearl Jam, Pixies, and Nirvana. It’s a cerebral experience that compels you to go deeper, immerse through layers and go with it. There is also a remarkable underground feel to the whole collection that progressively opens up a whole arena of rock.

The track ‘REETOXA’ opens the album. It has a fluid bass space, expansive and pointed as and when needed. The riffs are fuzzy and light. With beats breaks, nice and tight hooking you in, the track is a tide that you should definitely go with. It has a few anthemic raises that then flows into expressive guitar solos.

The band’s sound is impressive because it embodies the spirit of the theme and then frays from there into deeper nuances. Like in ‘INSATIABLE’, the track is made to compel the listener to drive into life. To ask for more, to defiantly be who they are, and be insatiable about it. The soundscape has the umph factor, one that gives you that momentum, and bolsters the confidence. Similarly in ‘STARE AT THE SEA’, the band creates a fuzzy expanse that drops you into a contemplative space. There is a sense of endless that the instrumentals create and the reflective vocal dynamic aptly captures the dazing moments of thought that we have all experienced around the ocean.

There are softer tracks, love songs that have that feel-good and romantic energy. In ‘THRIFT SHOP DRESS’, we meet a protagonist who is in awe of his love, in her thrift shop dress. There is a little bit of the swoon, but also a little bit of an edge. And as you listen to the song, you are able to vividly imagine the kind of girl they are singing about. Edgy with a softness, with a lot of quirk and a unique warmth.

Tracks like ‘AKAROA’ and ‘STRONG’ have a rustic folk touch as they flow into contemplative moments. Expressive and descriptive, it’s a soft dalliance. ‘BOTTLE’, ‘JADE EYES’, ‘PURPLE VEIN’, and ‘GIRLS ROCK’ have that strong hard rock meets punk pop energy. The riff fuzz and the omnipresent bassline fills up the soundscape. And with drastic chords and a beat forward sound, these tracks take you back to 90s alt rock.

It’s a remarkable rock album that lets you journey through the eras. There’s range, there’s nuance, and there’s so much passion and technique. And there’s a little bit of that modern ambiguity as well. So many things you can unpack especially if you love the rock genre and want something fresher and deeper to explore. Listen Now!
