EP Review/ Alt Rock : Lost Velvet’s ‘Endless’
Lost Velvet explores the dark and hypnotic spaces. With soft, glistening atmospheres, refracted by grunge, post rock, and shoegaze moments, their soundscape transports you to a whole new level of musical consciousness. The style is surreal, kind of alienates you at first until you start to see, start to understand, contemplate and identify with it. Even if you don’t want to go that deep, it’s an experience in novelty, a unique style that captures the nuances of emotions and the simmering spirit of the band.
Their latest release is the ‘Endless’ EP, a five song collection that somberly, and leisurely spreads across so many planes. In the title track, they loop glassy grooves with glinting basslines. In the chorus, every aspect of the song is expanded, stretched into an elastic force. The shoegaze riffs disperse the mind, daze the focus and spring a new musical sensation.
‘Wasted’ follows with its pausing thoughts and mellow melodies. The grooves are glassy, superficial. And from them fuzzy riffs scatter like dandelions. The powder is everywhere. The melodic work on this is amazing. It forms a part of the shadow work, along with the ethereal vocals and cinematic effects in the back. While the instrumentals tell a silent story, these background features set the scene, add complexity and context. A wasteland brews, bare and endless. And the rawness of it finds a melancholic expression in the guitar work.
‘Make it Alright’ goes into mysterious spaces. There are secrets entwined into each one of its progressions. Moments of ghostly quiet and lonely sounds that take over the soundscape. Even this one gets so immersively cinematic. The visuals that you absorb into yourself are inexplicable. It springs in the mind, a language, a world just brewing intuitively in the head. It is haunting, stormy yet settling. It is as magnificent and complex as twilight. The soft glistening light fusing with a darkening darkness. Those moments of serene chaos. To exist in that duality. That’s what this song feels like.
The EP also features the acoustic versions of ‘Endless’ and ‘Wasted’. With the plucked freshness of the strings, the songs get to be a little bit more contemplative. The broiling complexity of the rock versions is transformed to a clear space. A crisper space. But the places that it takes you are just compelling and just as confounding. Listen Now!
