EP Review/ Indie Pop : Ghost of Panama’s ‘Astral Days and Spectral Letters’
Ghost of Panama is an indie rock band formed with an interesting stylistic agenda. They involve the makings of alt rock into pop elements and electric instrumentals to create immersive atmospheres. Their latest release is ‘Astral Days and Spectral Letters’, an EP that explores rock power alongside feeling, exploration and creative adventure. The EP contains four tracks, each one with its own orbit that you’re pulled into.
The collection opens with ‘Astronauts’. It approaches the wonder of space travel with surreal guitar work, deep contemplative bass, and cerebral textures. The vocals speculate on the grandeur of it, with a sincerity and passion that you can get lost in. It has a vintage appeal for sure, one that is remisnicent faintly of the 70s, especially in the theme and the guitar flow. We see synth tones and melodies swishing around in the quieter moments, a soft disco cast that reinforces the retro appeal of their style.
‘Spectral’ follows with a fresh rhythm flow. Its fluidity is dynamic as it races towards a futurism. A revolutionary story that leads the world to a better place. Radical and compelling, the song has a passionate intensity that you cannot quite leave behind. The beats drift endlessly forward, the grooves are circular, repeating themselves, a spiral that makes you think deeper and deeper. And the vocals are illuminating with a profound tone, a narrator’s neutrality but also presents a fresh perspective.
‘Letter From Einstine’ is the third track. It’s electronic flavours are made to complement the rock, more softly and smoothly. The two styles dance into the emotion of the vocals. They are so expressive and serving the theme. Ambient notes, piano keys, and mellow rhythms mark this track. That loneliness of the astral world, the emotion of scientific progression and thought, these dualities are so beautifully fleshed out in the track.
‘Awayday’ is the last track. The soundscape fills up with beats, riffs and basslines. The vocals are light and airy, so weightless as they float over the instrumentals scene. We see electric accordion flows, luminous melodies, and a beat line that falls like a shooting star. And above it all, the vocals bob, forming asymmetric connections that ties them together irrevocably. It’s a good synergy to present the theme with.
Each track is its own master, connected by thematic loops and ideological wormholes, all composed and executed with a sophistication that you don’t see around anymore. There is depth, feeling, authentic emotion, and a sense of style. The band is forging a brand of its own with original concepts and explorations. And it’s refreshing. Listen Now!
