EP Review/ Pop : Emily Dimes’ ‘STAYbilise’
Emily Dimes is a singer-songwriter and a soulful artist. She blends folk and pop and casts it in a vulnerable ambience. It is immersive and quite powerful. It’s as if she’s let all the emotions spill onto the song, crafted to reveal rather than entertain. It’s confessional and raw in a way that is reminiscent of artists like Adele. Her latest release is ‘STAYbilise’, a six track EP that explores the complex contours and dynamic depth of love and heartache. Sometimes it’s a balm that soothes the listener’s emotions. Other times, it’s a cathartic healing flow that brings up the ugly and lightens it.
‘Stay’ opens the collection. The song is made with piano melodies and a flooding synth resonance. With fuzzy textures and an immersive flow, the soundscape envelopes the listener like mist on a rainy day. And within this space, Emily’s vocals ebb and flow, lifting into memory, thought, stream of consciousness, and emotion. The contemplative moments are contrasted with visceral and vivid presentations. A listening experience that neither forces nor holds anything back.
If the previous track dove into heartache, ‘Make You Proud’ forges a love that is resilient and perseveres. It’s the kind of love that you want to pass on and show other people. The vocals are expressive and anthemic. This song has a declaratory atmosphere. Powered by a launching voice and a powerful resolve, it’s memorable and feel-good. It fills your cup.
Music to the artist is a way of processing life, events, and feelings. ‘Till It Fades Away’ reveals not only a solemn space of confusion and aimlessness, but also a dimension of the artistic process. The scenes behind the song, the vocation behind the artist.
Each of the tracks carry the artist in it. Like tides, the songs change and the mood goes with it. But the contours of the artist and her style begins to take shape. In ‘Take Me With You’, she grieves over a beautiful yet short-lived love. With a charming, fun and feel-good tone, she bids adieu while trying to extend the sweetness of it. In ‘Eyes Wide’ she sets out an empowering track, builds a force field with the vocals and the music around herself and her partner. It’s fierce, resilient, and vibrant.
‘Simpler Times’ concludes the EP on an intimate note. Confessional and so innocently vulnerable, the artist aches for simpler times when emotions didn’t feel tangled and heart hadn’t grown so heavy. Listening to this, you leave the EP feeling a tenderness and endearment for the artist. Collection pieces of her that you found in yourself. If you like music that is soulful, honest, and unfiltered in craft, then this artist is definitely for you.
