EP Review/ Pop Punk : Piper Connolly’s ‘she’s too much!’

Piper Connolly is a rockstar. Her capacity for incredible energy is matched spectacularly with her evocative storytelling. Together, they create soundscapes that you won’t forget in a hurry. Piper has just released her latest release, ‘she’s too much!’, an autobiographical collection that is grown and cultivated out of her own life experiences. 

With powerful musical plays, a strong protagonist and irrepressible vocal energy, the songs come alive with fresh, youthful femme frames. Think Hayley Williams meets Chappelle Roan. Edgy and dark meets edgy and colorful. That’s the floating palette of this EP. Listen Now! 

‘beautiful life’ opens the EP. Tight basslines and beat lines hold down the fort as the synths and arena style vocals flood into the scene. It’s a celebration, an anthemic power pop track that is so fun to get roped into. Her vocals are confident and geared powerfully to take on the dreamy storm that whirls through the soundscape. ‘joyride’ has a similar build and feeling to it. The pop rock composition that is given a free drift, a ride you can go on forever and forever. Her vocals are especially beautiful in conflicted imageries and painful feelings that she explores. 

It is impossible to pigeon hole this artist. Her range is vast and her style is versatile, elastically stretching across the themes she wants to explore. Take the track, ‘bubblegum with razorblades’. The title itself reveals a duality, a darker side of the moon to a sunny image of bubblegums. She leans into the mold that society holds for her, drives and drills into it, revealing a whole other underbelly to it. That’s where pop meets punk. 

Opening with warm riff rooms and crackling basses, the track just takes off, shoots straight for the sky. The chorus is especially full house. Every part of the sonic frame is full of sensibilities. As the bridge rolls around, you know you’re gonna get shot out of her vocal cannon. If you enjoy Red Hot Chilli Peppers and 5 Seconds of Summer, this track will especially take you right back to them. 

While we see a little bit of softness and vulnerability in ‘unapologetic’,‘body bag’ is a wilful barrage, an unstoppable force that wages war. A powerful revenge song that swells out and explodes all over. The chorus comes alive with tsunami walls of riffs. She summons them with a flick of her finger and unleashes them after she’s said her piece. The instrumental exploration of this song, their application and artistic orchestration is undeniable, unforgettable. 

The collection showcases the artist for the Rockstar that she is. There’s no stopping her. Everything from her craft, performance, power, sonic chemistry, design and style has this undeniable star quality to them. She’s right there at the top of it all, claiming her space. Listen Now!
