EP Review/ Prog Rock : Wingfish’s ‘Looking Forward’
Wingfish is the progressive rock banner of vocalist and songwriter Jesper Larsenas. The artist has an extraordinary sonic pulse, especially the way he visualizes and creates rock soundscapes. It is jagged, rugged, layered, and bold. You’ll see a lot of broad strokes, driving rhythms and a dramatic atmosphere. In his latest EP, ‘Looking Forward’, the artist doesn’t hold back. He lets us have it. With Thomas Sandfeld on drums and Johan Gyrup on guitar, he builds a scrumptious world. Smoky, textured, glistening lines that perform for you, that put on an indulgent show. There are so many influences that converge within each song, so many styles and genre themes. So vast yet complementary and unique. If you enjoy the work of artists like ‘Panic! At the Disco, ‘30 seconds the Mars’, and ‘Queen’, you’ll definitely love the theatrical style and loaded performances in this collection.
The EP opens with the title track. A track that has a dark bass drive, so deep and full of explorative finesse. On that layer, the rock guitar builds. With the revving riffs, striking chords, and expressive grooves, it’s glamorous. Blues rock leading the way, the composition falls into molten pockets of psychedelics and classic rock. A retro cast within the progressive frame. You can’t help but want to get lost in this mood forever.
‘I Know Everything’ follows with its own brand of prog rock. The blues are instantly there, flashing through the vocals, surreptitiously claiming the instrumental work. The guitar work in this song is especially catchy. It keeps you hooked and then some. The riffs and basslines have experimental elements and psychedelics. If you tune in, they give you a whole journey within themselves, taking you places within the song.
‘Promise She Made’ concludes the trilogy. The blues here show up in the vocals. In the timbre, in its low tones. Everything about it, the emotion, expression, inflection. All of it has a bluesy cast to them. The instrumentals are smooth, forming empathetic loops around the vocals, progressing in its evocative vein and growing from there.
All three tracks have a distinct blues flavor, expressed with the Larsens’s original design and novelty. There’s an explorative ethos within each one, which is so well done that you become a fan. You want to see what else he comes up with because it’s not anything like you’ve heard before. Listen Now!
