EP Review/ Reggae : C’batch’s ‘I Guess You Want it This Way (Reggae) - Tribute to Ernest Ranglin’
C’batch’s latest release is ‘I Guess You Want it This Way (Reggae) - Tribute to Ernest Ranglin’, an EP that gives the listener so many stylistic interpretations and energy of one track.
The original release is a reggae composition, groovy and mellow, as the rhythm travels through the soundscape. It has a tropical air, free and open, full of that peace that the genre is usually reputed to spread.
The artist retains that essence of reggae, elevates the energy with a R&B/ soul pop vocal line. You’ll see melodic R&B elements swirling across the soundscape as well, wrapping it all up in a softness. C’batch has then covered the song and produced them to bring in new flavors and interpretations of the composition. There are cinematic reggae versions that loop in plush neoclassicals and orchestral builds into the original reggae flow. It creates such beautiful layers of music, moments that are made more expansive because of the expressive instrumentals that he weaves through the song. It also feels more festive and colorful, active with a whole different feel.
The artist has also released a ‘reggae dub’ version. In this he widens the beat landscape, creating mellow beat layers to travel along with the reggae groove. It is a very slight diversion though, but still has a very noticeable effect on the track as a whole. C’batch continues to establish himself as a prolific and insightful artist and producer. With ideas that allow the listener to absorb more of his vision.
