EP Review/ Soul Pop : Mia Delamar’s ‘Love Me… Not’

Mia Delamar is a soul pop artist and a singer-songwriter who creates such deep and vivid portraits of experience. Her songs are best described as fluid frames of storytelling, an experience that so seamlessly combines emotions and human moments.

Her latest release is ‘Love Me… Not’, a collection that blends R&B/ soul with commercial pop production and energy. The result is a contemplative, expressive, and addictive album. Think Rihanna and Beyonce in early 2000s. She revives that ethos, pulling R&B in all its brilliance to the center stage. And she does it well.

‘Into You’ opens the album. It’s a flow, her vocals taking the lead and her emotions thrown open for us to journey through. The soundscape is moody, dim and alive, forming softly and refreshingly around you. There are a lot of confessional planes within the song that are relatable to people who are falling in love and dreaming of a life ahead.

There’s a lot of new age soul and modern elements that she weaves into her music as well. In ‘Whatever’ we see mellow frames, with trap beats. With harmonies that feel so fresh and smooth, you can contemplate on love and the connections you share. ‘Cool - MiMix’ is reminiscent of SZA’s style. Scaling so intuitively and spontaneously. The vocals are new and expressive, each moment holding feelings.

‘H.O.M.B’ is sensual and fresh. That new, blended with the old, it is made with R&B, hip-hop beats, and catchy vocal hooks. Each song seems to give us so many versions and vocal personalities. The artist’s ability to let her voice and vocal emotion shift seems so natural, effortless. The bold sensuality in HOMB is made silky, moody and soft in ‘My Love Don’t Mean a Thing’. In ‘Complicated’ it has an edgy soul pop feel. It’s fluid and free, nicely landing like frills on a dress.

‘Say That’, ‘Personal’ and ‘I Know’ are all bold tracks. Her vocals are open, loud, and forged with bold characters. The energy is given to you. It’s fun, it asks for your attention, holds it, and keeps on giving you more. Lastly, in ‘The Drain’, we see a mellifluous synth pop flow. So fluid, so intimate, free. It’s so full of pain, melancholy showcased with a feminine grief. So soft that it makes you ache. The bitter sweetness is there, all over, so well portrayed and presented. Listen Now!
