Song Review/ Synth Pop Rock : Midsummer Ex’s ‘Television’
Midsummer Ex is a Swedish artist and musician who explores the retro-futuristic sphere. Using muted vibrance, a vast textural profile, and an explorative flow, he revives the genre with vintage nostalgia and progressive themes. It’s as if you’re in an old timey classic movie, daydreaming about space travel. He blends these two worlds with a language and style of his own. With pervasive lenses and catchy hooks. With that 80s pop rock twist and retro synths, he makes emphatic musical gestures. One that is hard to forget.
His latest release is ‘Television’, a track that has that unforgettable synth pop beat and a heartfelt pop rock flow. The style is not as modern or as experimental as Daft Punk. But it has a more lived in and cinematic make up. Think artists like M83 and David Bowie. The nostalgia kick is quite strong and that childhood + future colliding feeling gets to be all too real. It also has that spanning cinematic space, opens up and forms with an arena make up. It’s dazing, dreamy, and full of memories.
The track is paired with an instrumental version of it. Slathered with synths, spiralling, melting on top of each other with a punching beat backdrop. Listening to it without the vocals, opens up a retro-futuristic highway. A drift. So just close your eyes. Imagine yourself driving a vintage red convertible through a highway in space. Planet rotating on either side, the radio blasting with music and your head full of freedom. This listening experience would take you back to artists like Desire, Chromatics, and Glass Candy.
