The Screaming Pope Builds a Dynamic Electronic Castle with Latest ‘Neon Heights’

The Screaming Pope is an eccentric electronic music banner founded by Boston artist and musician, George Bolton. He leverages the high elasticity of electronica, and blending it with imagination, creates vibrant sonic journeys for his audience. The album, ‘Neon Heights’ was his sixteen and final album of the year 2023.

‘Movie Star’ breaks out the album with a glamorous love song; burnished with melancholic curls and bluesy pop. Dots of trap beats splatter across a tinsel synth sky while the baritonal mist passes by with contemporary poetry. The track ‘I Want You’ forms along the same plane of intimacy with a stream of consciousness narrative. You’ll encounter more enhanced hip-hop influences later in the album with ‘If You Wanna Vibe’.

For now, the lo-fi ambience is prolonged by the inky synths in Pedal to the Floor. Neo-soul and R&B flourishes brighten the soundscape. And with wispy twinkles and folk beats, the track has an unexpected, yet elating congruency. ‘Tall, Dark and Dangerous’ sparks with a similar fantasy calling back the work of artists like SZA, Frank Ocean, and Doja Cat.

Tracks like ‘Tunneling’, ‘When the Beat Drops’ and ‘I Won’t’ are rich with experimental house and techno variants. The symmetry is easy to get lost in. And the artist uses it to skilfully cultivate trance and movement. Sprinkled across these dynamic productions are soulful acoustic numbers. Touched by careening neo-classicals, the title track is one of them. ‘Rain is Pouring’ and ‘The Battle’ are doused in fluid acoustic craft to lead us into atmospheres of sentiment and contemplation.

As a veteran of electronic music, George has, over time, polished the art of composition and presentation. Across fourteen tracks, he springs into fresh soundscapes and new territories. Each of them have a fantasy built into them, an exotism and adventure that manifests in patterns, chromatism, tonality, and texture. Listen Now!
