Album Review : POINT3NINE’s ‘ Bulletproof Vest’

POINT3NINE is a beat-driven experimental and exploratory banner. The soundscapes are abstract planes, rooted in deep concept and contemplation. On the surface of it, you might find a spatial randomness textured with cryptic industrial music. You’ll also spot influences of industrial hip-hop, creative plays with noise, all cast in a dark ambience that will elevate the consciousness. ‘Bulletproof Vest’ is the latest EP from the artist. POINT3NINE describes the collection as a ‘Straight original JA/American rudeboy gnarlyness’. With deliberate infusions of grit and other rough texture, he unveils a dystopian narrative that alienates and disorients the listener in the best way.

POINT3NINE is infamous for his wilful absurdities. Through avant garde manifestations, he presents a sense of mystery that dispels all ennui. And this series is no different. The title track introduces the EP. With grave and hypnotic percussive lines, the listener is led through foggy frames of sound. New details and elements are revealed at every stage, as if we are walking through a dark room with a torchlight. And slowly the pieces form a murky and eerie context in the mind. The third track, ‘Star’ is pursued with a similar pattern and perspective.

‘Bashment’ is composed with a little more dynamism. Adding melodic and reggae variations to the beat line, the track flows with complexity. It darkens the theme, intensifies it and prepares it for the successors. ‘Corn’ and ‘Lawwwdavmercy’ both are deltas of thematic wealth. The artist engenders a mellow chaos. The backdrop crackles with distortion, reinforcing the randomness of noise, celebrating its rogue elements. ‘Whine’ is superimposed with a strong melodic coherence. Groovy guitar wires and ethereal harmonies gain a funk charisma and jazz tones. It is a smooth continuum with symmetric evolutions, slowly finding meaning and definition. Listen Now!
