Wishpenny Creates Fluid Spaces of Alt-Folk in ‘day after dark’

Wishpenny is the sonic banner of Nashville-based duo of Brian and Regina Russell. Their interpretation of country music blends folk and blues with the excitations of funk and jazz. And the result is a sound that shines with both the contemplative essence of the classics and the mellow innovations of modern music. The band has just released their sophomore album ‘day after dark’, a collection that leverages astronomical themes to highlight the surreality of human experiences. The measured and ambient rhythms of the tracks flow into each other to curate a balmy state of mind. Listen Now!

The title track is strung with resounding acoustics, marked with oozing trumpet accents, bluesy vocals, and a roughly cultivated folk rock groove. Regina’s vocal delivery : tonalities, emotions, and allure is so effortlessly classic in a way that is reminiscent of Joni Mitchell.

It holds a fluid space, nurturing and reflecting the eclectic sonic themes explored by the instrumentals. The country folk elements are seamlessly diluted with diverse elements in a way that allows you to sense and enjoy it but never catch it. It is like a magician’s secret. ‘close’ has the same mild promiscuity of the title track. With the folk tinged with the cascading frills of jazz, it soothes and contains the soul.

‘glide and cover’ is a radiant acoustic rock instrumental that beautifully evolves. Brian takes his time with playing and growing the composition, each cycle adding detail and richness to the emotional undercurrent. Opting for a monotonal composition, he delights in the momentous evolutions and you can’t help but delight with him. ‘better than we found’ is just as free rhythmed as its predecessor and together with the measured flow of Regina’s vocals, they form a meditative medium.

In ‘not about love’ we see a fresh brand of Regina’s vocals, its textured rawness dissolves into the resonant acoustics. It demonstrates a sharp emotional depth that justifies the melancholy that forms on the surface. ‘escape velocity’ is a classic country song that engenders a vintage west American vibe which extends into the concluding track ‘step into the sun’. Contemplative, hypnotic, and enchanting, these tracks will make you nostalgic for artists like Fleetwood Mac, Nick Drake, and Neil Young.

Folk rock is pretty elastic as a genre as it deals intimately with the abstractions and spanning contemplations of the mind. Wishpenny deal with it in that spirit; so tender and sweet are the compositions. They let it carry the wind and tide of their thoughts, giving it time to emerge, develop, and flow out into the world.
