Album Review/ Alt Rock : Siren Section’s ‘Separation Team’
Siren Section is an experimental, electronic rock, alt pop group with a conceptual depth that will blow your mind. Their sound, with its multi-faceted design and exploration sounds otherworldly, living up to their name. The novelty is just part of the charm though. It’s elevated by a non-conforming sense of style. The group seem to have a world of their own that they draw from and it’s fascinating to catch glimpses of this space through their music. Their latest release is ‘Separation Team’, a collection that builds a new sound sphere, song by song. The boundaries are forgotten. All that they care about is the music and the sensibilities. It’s quite compelling and the autonomy of their sound is intoxicating. Keeps you coming back for more.
‘CONSTRUCT’ opens the album. Deep basslines interspersed with glitch electronica to project a suspense atmosphere. There is that post rock aura - mysterious and abstract which they turn into a hypnotic storm. Tracks like ‘MARKER’ and ‘GLASS CANNON’ are made with a similar rich, coarse wind. The basslines run deep and it is ravished by a boundlessness that the listener can only access progressively. It is contemplative and refreshingly ambiguous. So you can journey through them, feel the theme out in the context of your thoughts and imagination.
Contrastedly, in tracks like ‘BULLET TRAIN’, ‘TRITAGONIST 1’, and ‘MINOTAUR’, the band explores a drum n bass combination with an emphatic beat and a recurring pattern. The progression happens in a continuum in a way that makes you feel like you’re swirling within a labyrinth of music. It’s fun, edgy and youthful.
The stylistic spectrum that they spread out across this album is quite interesting. Which is what makes it impossible to classify this group. They go where the idea takes them. The music and style seems to follow as well.
In ‘DANGEROUS TO KNOW’, ‘TRITAGONIST 2’, and ‘SOME OF THIS MEANS EVERYTHING’, we enter a glorious rock world. It is lavish with texture, spilling over the listener, immersing them in that warm, fuzzy globe. The moods are different of course across the tracks. One has a pop lift and the other a slower folk rock mood. But to be swirling in that coarse fuzz of riffs and basslines, suspended as you feel. It’s a very pleasing feeling.
While there are experimental elements in most songs, there are a few numbers that showcase deeper and more nuanced explorations. Like ‘CARRY THROUGH’. A track that radiates with a modern electronic/ glitch consciousness. As it progresses, it flows into a shoegaze sphere that nicely flattens the landscape and gives you an abundance of sensibilities. ‘FLINCH’ is made of a techno spruced electronic drift that is broken up with drum n bass and glitch accessories. It is worlds on worlds on worlds. You’ll know their mysteries and secrets when you enter them. Listen Now!
