Album Review/ Art Rock : Books of Moods’ ‘Dreams’
Books of Moods is an art rock band with a plush sound. Listening to their music is like travelling. There’s a new experience, a new feeling around every corner. Influenced by bands like The Beatles, The Velvet Underground, David Bowie, and Arcade Fire, their sound journeys through the decades. From the 60s to the 90s, they wrap the time, the music around them and see what comes out.
Their latest release is the ‘Dreams’ album. As you listen to it, song by song, you start to feel the dream inside them all. It’s a beautiful journey.
‘Space Pt.1’ opens the collection. It sets out an acoustic daze. One that gently leads you into an infinity. The bareness of the soundscape reveals an expanse. And with baritones floating along, you can just lounge and grow into it. The layers come on progressively. There’s folk rock, rock blues, bluesy dreams, dreamy ethereal planes and then they all come together into a fluid frame. ‘Space Pt.2’ is more of a transcendental exploration. Listening to the track feels like a lucid dream, one that involves vivid yet dissolving imagery frames.
Travelling along the same rhythm is ‘Slow Day’, ‘Gaia’, and ‘Amoureux’. These tracks linger for that extra moment and it makes all the difference. The instrumentals are all an inseparable stream, one an extension of another. It almost feels like world building. And the baritones, so lilting and light goes by leisurely. These tracks make you feel like you have all the time in the world. It opens up spaces for you to open into. If you like bands like F16s, Sufjan Stevens, and Peter Cat Recording Co., then you’re sure to love the thoughtful flow of these tracks.
The album brings moments of play as well. In tracks like ‘Travel’, ‘Holidays’ and ‘Sunday Mood’, you’ll see acoustical points that play with each other. They build these patterns up, energizing it with feel-good chords and riffs. The vocals weave in and out, tying it all with a tale. There’s a lot of color and a whole lot of sentiment. It paints a landscape, with texture, hue and a lot of gradient. These tracks are beautiful to just immerse in and grow into. Listen Now!
