EP Review/ Alternative : SEVEN NATION ARMY’s ‘Power and Money’
SEVEN NATION ARMY. is an alternative project that explores the spheres of electro rock. All their tracks feel like they're contained in a whole new world of music. It’s an incredible project because it transports you to a fresh way of thinking and feeling about a theme. Their latest release is the ‘Power and Money’ EP, a three track collection that serves up versions of the same song.
The track unpacks the ridiculousness of an ideology and a government that is blinded by power and money. With that post grunge atmosphere, the artist is able to orchestrate a satire that condemns and makes you contemplate. You’ll find a lot of moments where artistic elements are blended with a rebellious spirit to create an enigmatic gloom of sorts. The three versions in this EP are ‘Electro Time’, ‘80s Synths’, and ‘Raw Guitars’.
The EP opens with the Electro Time version. It has a remarkably retro feel that ties into a futuristic frame. The serpentine curves of the vocals weave through. It awakens a hypnotic pulse, draws your attention to the bass details and the underbelly of the track. The best way to enjoy the track is to let the electro wave lead you into its moody caves of morality, anger, revolution, and hate.
The 80s Synths version stays close to the electro time version. But it is splashed with chromatism and there is a new dimension to experiencing the theme. It’s a new tangent that leads you into contemplative realms. And bass is also a little bit more textured here. It feels especially like Daft Punk soundscapes in a few frames. It’s quite enjoyable. Forking into two planes, you are given the space and interpretation to reconcile the soundscape.
The Raw Guitars version takes you to a deeper angst level. With textured riffs filling the song like a rain cloud, the angst booms. You can feel it in as the snaking basslines deepen and burrow into a burning core. The vocals even though consistent across the three versions is drawn into a new feeling, a deeper human darkness that you can resonate with. It’s biting critique and simmering hatred for tyrants and unfair governments that exists across the world right now.
Founded by Jarek Balsamski, the project is meant to bring a kind of darkness and moody glamor to the theme. Think Daft Punk blended with The Arctic Monkeys and Tame Impala. A triangle of sound that celebrates innovation and cerebral notions of his music.
