Album Review/ Country : Levi Sap Nei Thang’s ‘Childhood Memories’
With Levi Sap Nei Thang, you don’t just get a song. You get a whole array of artistic experiences. As an artist, songwriter, and poet, she’s adept at crafting layers into her music, each one taking you deeper into the ethos of her art and style. Her latest release is the ‘Childhood Memories’ album, a collection for which she chooses country as her medium. With pastoral lyrics and vivid imagery, she brings such elaborate stories and human experiences to life. It’s powerful in its feminine influence. With autobiographical inspirations, the song is like a film that speculates on the artist’s world and her life.
‘Born in September’ paints a stormy picture of rain and thunder. With its drama all around, the artist creates a birthing story, connecting it with virtues like resilience, perseverance and invincibility. It’s strong, empowering and full of zest. The banjo is an expressive instrument that is employed in a bolstering way.
In the next track, ‘Seer’, we see a softer banjo line, a supportive act as it walks alongside the vocal rumination. The album celebrates the instrument, showcasing its expansive use case and mood spectrums. In ‘My Name’, it is playful, descriptive, and full of pep to match the mood and spirit of the song. In tracks like ‘Childhood Joy’ and ‘Childhood Sunday’, we get to see the instrumental become so animated and full of life. Like a fountain, it pours out of the composition, carrying the emotion and the vocal emotion with it!
‘Papa’ has an evocative sound. With long vocal moments, the song paves a long path back to the past. Filtered with nostalgia and a brimming emotional atmosphere, we get to feel the artist’s bond with her father, the things he did for her, the moments he crafted with thoughtfulness. The song has such a retro vibe. It is reminiscent of Abba. ‘Radio’ offers a similar throwback with its expressive violin sounds and soft instrumental swings.
There’s a lot of brands of country and banjo playing that she explores across the track. ‘Fishing Trip’ and ‘Farmers’ are rustic in a kind of dusty way. ‘Gum & Sweet’ takes you back to the dreamy and joyful moments of youth. ‘Oil Lamp’ is a blues country expanse, one that you can drift with. It’s slow and mellow but full of sensibilities. Lastly, we have ‘I Was Bullied’, a stormy track that asserts the pain but also the pride of growth and strength. A full circle moment. Listen Now!
