Album Review/ Folk Pop : Kat Moth’s ‘Blooming Mind’

Kat Moth is a singer-songwriter and an alt folk artist who crafts music as an extension of her. Each song is a self portrait that comes alive with personal emotions, brooding poetry and passing tales. Her latest release is ‘Blooming Mind’, a collection that tells the story of healing, growth and thriving.

Drawn from storytelling heartache, it’s kind of like a journey that you go on. Like getting to know a person piece by piece. Or it also feels like an affirmation journal, soft, melodious mail that soothes the soul.

In tracks like ‘Sparkling and Bright’, ‘I Will Let Go Now’ and ‘Blooming Mind’, the listener is absorbed into the vivid daze of the song. It’s not just singing and instruments. There’s a vintage craft to it, informed by depth, poetry, imagery and imagination. These tracks, with their natural rhythms, vulnerable singing, and reflective lyrics leave a profound impression. If you like the deepening folk rock planes of Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake, then you’ll love these pieces.

‘You Will Never Know My Name’, ‘If I Feel It, It’s Real’ and ‘I Killed The Elephant’ are tracks that slow down time around you. These tracks deepen like ink on paper and disperse with the spirit of the song. The vocals form in circles and ovals across the soundscape. With the instrumentals slating gently into these spotlights, the songs get to be a dreamy present.

The album is like a picture journal that comes alive in its stories. Blending scrap pieces of memories with meaningful storytelling and slow brewed musical craft, the atmosphere is quite vintage. You see it in everything. The music is intended to collage into an intimate artwork.

‘She Set Herself Free’ and ‘New Moon’, start at this artsy space. You’ll see the experience of girlhood lifting into the beautiful complexity of womanhood. All of these tracks floating from transient and soft experiences to deeper moments.
