Album Review/ Folk Rock : David Scott Weaver’s ‘Songs of Hope and Resistance’

David Scott Weaver is a singer-songwriter and a country folk artist. He makes the kind of music that melts into your life. His songs seem so alive with their luminosity, freshness and unadulterated humanness. His latest release is the ‘Songs of Hope and Resistance’ album. The songs are simple, heartfelt and deal with daily life. So they’re accessible, relatable and delightfully engaging. 

The album opens with ‘Everything That Jesus Wouldn’t Do’, a track that with its lightness and generous contemplations meditates on what it means to be a good human being. With its many instruments, the song feels weaved in. You can literally see the threads of music that crisscross and come together harmoniously. The craft is out there, for everyone to see. It’s honest and direct, just like the vocals. We see this form even in the track, ‘Lift Up Your Voice’, a song that calls you to praise and celebrate the excellence of the human experience. It’s banjo melodies and the choral elements really brings a camaraderie to the song that moves you to join in. 

Speaking of Banjos, ‘I Don’t Want Your Billions, Mister’ is a track that is almost entirely detailed with a banjo. It’s a chunky track with a lot of character and rebellion. A critique of the nation’s leader who is going against the grain of the hardworking American values. It is followed by the singular punk rock song of the album, ‘Fight The Fascists’. The track is loaded like a gun. Full of gunpowder and defiance, with the immense potential to start a rebellion. The vocals are declaratory, anthemic. And the riffs, bass, and beats have that spirit that moves the masses. Take you back to the time when punk was the music of the anti-government. It is the music of rage and righteousness. And it’s the absolute best. 

‘We Cannot Bend’ follows with a soothing and hopeful message for the American people. With its light acoustics and a feel-good atmosphere, the track reminds us of the resilience and perseverance of the American spirit, no matter who or what the enemy. ‘Thoughts and Prayers’ is another song that forms in the same vein. ‘I Still Have Hope’ is another unique, one of a kind track in the album. With its reggae rhythm, rasta spirit and one love filling all the hearts, it is a song of peace, harmony and hope. Listen Now!
