Album Review/ Indie : appetiteapple’s ‘Gratitudes’

appetiteapple is the modern compositional project of composer, Insub Yoon. The artist brings brilliant world building sensibilities to his soundscapes, creating fun flows, immersive landscapes, and evocative gestures. All in a state of flow, with a fluidity that beautifully lends itself to thinking, feeling, and being.

His latest release is the ‘Gratitudes’ album, a collection of music that is fresh, light and full of airy atmospheres. Each one representing the concept in the title, stretching it to create a scenery, an inner landscape, and a unique state of mind.

‘Dark Before Dawn’ opens the collection. With synths, skating beats, ethereal echoes, and dynamic melodic ripples, the artist projects the many shades of darkness before dawn. Traces the gradient till the sky breaks with color. The color underneath it brings so much joy with it, even as you’re exploring the mystique of the overarching darkness. There are a lot of tracks within the album that focus on this splendid world building. Tracks that play out in the nebulous spaces, creating interpretations that you can revel in and explore. Tracks like ‘Landscapes’, ‘Soothe’ and ‘Hello To Strangers’. These tracks have such wonderful imagery frames that you can get lost detailing and growing into. It’s a great way to project your imagination and have it be reflected, cultivated and exchanged.

Tracks like ‘Matter of Decision’, ‘Tension’, and ‘The River’ showcase smooth, measured grooves. Marked by the freedom in the rhythm, these are travelling tracks. Compositions that take you places and make you part of the journey. The melodic lines are defined. The grooves are consistent, but scaling. With synths and atmospheric resonance, the scene seems to form intuitively, as an aftermath of the rhythm. There’s so much energy, so much liveliness within these tracks. You can feel the artistic mind at work, the vision coming alive and taking form in flow.

‘Accomplishment’, ‘Monuments’, and ‘Afternoon’ are tracks that seem to be in the state of forming and fully formed at the same time. These tracks, compositionally form across the duration. However, the essence of them is fully formed and complete even as the track begins. The artist only fleshes it out, showcases their dimensions and explains it in passing. It’s like going to a museum and looking at a work of art. Full and complete form. Taking form in the mind of the listener. So beautifully envisioned and presented. Insub Yoon is a master presenter, who is insightful in the way he constructs the sonic mold and presents his scene. Listen Now!

The album is available for streaming on popular sites like Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, and Amazon Music!
