Album Review/ Indie Folk : Jay Putty’s ‘Mountains & Valleys’

Jay Putty is a singer-songwriter with a compelling musical appeal. His work accounts for the expanse, for the grey areas of life, the infinities of moments and the magic in the mundanity. The spirit of his music is impacted by it, carries it and delivers it to the listener. With his latest release, ‘Mountains and Valleys’, you can definitely feel the power, contemplation, complexity, and purity of his artistry. Made to cast perspective and drive to exhilarating peaks, the album is best imagined as a landscape, a panoramic view that has you feeling like you’re on the brink of something.

‘Mountains’ is the introductory track, its make-up, a grand orchestra. Brimming with cinematic instrumentals, lofty notes and plush grandeur, the interlude is a spectrum, a range that is meant to make you feel like you’re on top of the world. The freshness, crisp clarity, its altitude and the sheer magnitude of the composition provides the perfect introduction to the rest of the album.

‘Call of the Wild’ is a high energy, electro pop-rock track. Think Avicii, Fun, Alesso and Swedish House Mafia. The song is an anthem, so free, youthful and wild. It makes you feel unstoppable and invincible. So perfect to be impulsive with, because it has that big YOLO energy that makes you go big and bright. ‘Start of Something New’ is also a splashy track. Made and dispersing with the euphoria of starting something new, it is such a hopeful song. The electro pop song is so vivid and vibrant, such a positive feeling, and makes life feel so beautiful.

While the above tracks align with the energy and excitement of a mountain’s summit. Tracks like ‘Everyday Magic’, ‘In Between’ and ‘I’ll Be Your Rescue’ spread out into gradual valleys of music. They are slower, more reflective of the inner world and themes like resilience. With acoustic explorations, lyrical intricacies, and a rich tapestry of the human condition, these tracks drip into you. They cause you to experience the expanse contained within you and it is such a powerful feeling.  ‘Valley’ forms the epilogue of the album, concluding the collection with its serene acoustical atmospheres, ethereal scenes, aching realities, and hope. Always hope. Listen Now!
