Album Review/ Psychedelic Rock : The Buttons’ ‘Medication’

The Buttons are an explorative music duo. They let their music be affected by the deep magical moments of life, and showcase it with simple and sophisticated music design. Their music is fluid and momentous, carrying with it the feeling of every second of the creative process. The camaraderie, the connection, the creativity, and even the mess sometimes. The way we see it, their music celebrates and creates within that sphere.

Their latest release is ‘Medication’, a ten track album that is boundless in its energy and creative pursuit. It is the second album from the duo this year, and fifth studio album in total. Let’s get into it! 

The duo set up a swirling plane of music. Psychedelic rock that meets indie tendencies but also takes you back to the 60s. To the era of The Beatles and Pink Floyd where music was a deep and immersive medium of expression. Where the musical shapes, styles and boundaries were pushed to create a language of their own. That’s the depth at which this band operated. This album especially goes into psychedelic profiles with a passion. In tracks like ‘Colours’, ‘Voodoo’ and ‘The Acid Test’, you can clearly absorb the textural dissonance that comes with music. Where a shoegaze plane meets the psychedelic depth to create an expansive space of feeling. 

Tracks like ‘Dig it Out!’, ‘She Plays A Tambourine’, and ‘Hippy Chick’ have such intense and varied musical sensibilities. They are especially rustic and rooted in the 60s-70s sound design. However, these artists do revive those stylistic elements with their own unique interpretation. You’ll find yourself reminiscing of The Beatles, The Bangles and even the modern psychedelic Australian band, Glass Beams. 

‘Psychedelic Sunrise’ and ‘(Maybe) I’ve Still Got Time’ have a lighter, more expansive feel. They have the dreamy, surreal feel built into it that will remind you a little bit of Coldplay and One Republic. Lastly, ‘Medication’, the title track. Concluding the album, it takes its own time to form, build and take form. It is an evocative anthem. With sweeping frames of shoegaze, an intimate vocal feel and themes that will liberate and revive you, the duo really lean on the vitality of self-medication sometimes. Listen Now!
