EP Review/ Folk : Zachary Mason’s ‘Welcome To My Heart’
Zachary Mason is a singer-songwriter and a folk country artist. He loves to bring meditative spells into his soundscapes. Moments of swirling stillness that takes you on a journey. Emotions, feelings, reflections, what have you. It is a beautiful vehicle to journey through them. His latest release is ‘Welcome To My Heart’, a three track EP that best features his style.
It is doting, pausing and compels you to engage with the flow of the music. If you enjoy artists like Nick Drake, you’re sure to love the deep and layered feelings that this EP evokes.
‘Can’t Feel My Autumn…’ opens the EP. With its melancholic feel blended with the dusky moods of autumn. It lifts off the soundscape like petrichor, filling the whole frame. The guitar acoustics dance gently like a candle flame, its own rhythm. Ethereal synths wield the feeling in the backdrop, they bring that artistic mystery and mystic. Zachary’s vocals are soft lights in a fog. They flash and grow silent like fireflies, glowing with feeling, creating a language of their own. It’s a beautiful song to experience solitude in.
‘I Need Freedom’ follows with its own world. The artist opens up an expansive space for his listeners to float into and become swept away. The style is the most romantic. And to use this style to engage with a concept like freedom, feels most retro. Into the soft streams of acoustic guitar, he blends blues guitar lines. His vocals are formless, free like the wind. But there’s something in the emotion that feels grounding, rooted in something sacred and inherent.
‘Me and I’ presents a nostalgic journey. It is conditioned and softened with instrumental texture and feeling. Something is in a swirl, travelling through the soundscape. His storytelling lyrics and vocals have a contemplative atmosphere. A synth lift, soft and untelling blooms within the soundscape and takes you to an elated state of thought.
