EP Review/ Rock n Roll : DownTown Mystic’s ‘Mystic Highway Road Trip’
DownTown Mystic set out a much needed rock n roll EP with the ‘Mystic Highway Road Trip’. The band’s vintage yet modern tagline is so nicely brought out in this collection. Building up nice and clean classic rock grooves to a rock n roll plane. All this with memorable blues and vocals that you will not forget in a hurry. There’s something very appealing about this EP.
Curated for a road trip (as the title suggests), it presents a nice sing-along drift that fills the car and lifts the spirit. The tracks literally come alive. If you love the 70s and 80s decade where rock was nicely glammed up and lit up with blues, then you’ll love this collection. It’s like a Time Machine that takes you back to artists like David Bowie, Queen, U2, Bruce Springsteen, and Bon Jovi.
The Road Trip begins with ‘Superstar - To Sir Elton with Love Mix’, a love letter from one musician to another, decades apart. It is glam rock at its best. With a pulling groove, warm floating riffs, and chords that set you up for an incredible peak, the song is performative. It’s like a live show with color, light and so much warmth. A rock n roll glow like no other, perfectly suited to the dedication of the song. Next up, we have ‘Live’. With its walking bassline and self-assured groove, it instantly climbs on you. And then lit up by deep country instrumentals and winding rock chords, it is flush with so many variations of blues. It is soul music with a southern depth that makes you want more and more.
This flavor is reinforced again in the track, ‘Somebody’s Always Doin’ Something to Somebody’. But it has an undeniable rock n roll charisma. The groove is bold, a journey is undeniable. The vocals are especially good. The emotion of it, and the stylistic moments within it, does something. It fuels the whole track, inspires the instrumental journeys and makes it unforgettable.
‘Losing My Mind - Re Mix’ also has the country blues dimension. It is soulful but explores the theme with a dynamism in a way that creates heartfelt depth. The swing groove, warm melodies and passionate vocal display just keeps you nicely melted. ‘Shadow Walk’ is more of a moody classic rock song. It spreads out and fills the room with its blues. So expansive and present in what it has to say. If you like immersive classic rock tracks that bury you deep within itself, then this one is for you. The guitar solos and the vocal energy is transformative.
‘Fly - Buddy Holly Mix’ is a lifting track that is light, carefree and drifting. It’s the perfect convertible track. Especially when you’re driving down country roads. It has the unbounded-ness and the unending energy of the wind. It is so feel-good and has the surge of an anthem. So if you need a track that uplifts you while also being contemplative, then this is the perfect track for you.
