Song Review/ Folk Rock : Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends’ ‘The Hag’

Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends have set out their brand new album, ‘The King and The Sparrow’. Unraveling legends and myths, the album is full of lore. It’s filled with imagery and instrumental moods that draw you into the tales. Taken from this album is ‘The Hag’, a song that is wrapped by the tragic veil of an enduring figure who was falsely accused of witchcraft and burned at the stake.

Interpreting the 1834 poem of Swedish writer, Carl Jonas Love Almqvist, the track juxtaposes historical persecution of women and sexism in the modern day. It’s a contemplative folk ballad that reveals the life behind the dogma, the mishaps of casual prejudice. The band does a great job casting this in a dark and moody backdrop. It softly floats you into a fantastical space. By the end of it, your inner landscape will feel surreal and dreamlike, as if you exist in a whole different plane of consciousness. It’s a meditative daze that you want to keep looping back into.
